Ten years have passed
But here, at last,
They are.
They’re pale and gaunt
The horror haunts
Them still.
They laugh, then cry
Then gaze and try
To take
It in: the years
Of screams and tears
Are done.
It will be hard:
They have been scarred
For life.
But with each day
They’ll heal, for they
Are strong.
Their heads held high,
As one they cry
“We’re home.”
Good God, that is scary. Nicely done.

It’s really interesting that you use the word scary. What I was going for was “broken nursery rhyme” – unnerving. All of the stuff I was hearing on the news was “isn’t this great?” And of course it is but it’s also awful at the same time, so I tried to do a bog standard “uplifting” poem, but a damaged one. I’m glad that came across!
