#100poeticanswers 90: Why Did Old Painters Paint Naked People So Often?

Another one that was asked of teaching assistant Jen. On a school trip to an art gallery, I’m guessing!

They’d have told you, if they could, that they were

Trying to capture, with their paints and charcoal

What a person is; not what clothes look like.

They tried to show the beauty of the body

It wasn’t rude or sexy, it was honest.

A way of understanding being human.

At least… That’s what they’d say, if we could ask them;

Perhaps they just got bored of painting clothing.
