The News In Poetry Day 62: Saying No (TW child sexual exploitation)

TRIGGER WARNING for child sexual exploitation.

The video on this link inspired today’s poem.

It was ” not appropriate” –
As she was drugged,
And raped,
And sold,
As she was used,
And hurt,
And told
That this was a relationship –
It was “not appropriate”
To refuse.
“No” was a word
She dared not say.
Too shocking,
Too taboo.
As she was drugged
And raped
And hurt.
Defiance wasn’t something she could do.
And if we teach our girls
To aquiesce;
That all their worth
Lies in their will to please,
We have ourselves to blame
As much as men like these.

The News In Poetry Day 60: Dragon Slayers and Mousetraps

Bit of a weird one today.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/bedroom-tax-woman-commits-suicide-235309248.html

You’d rather hunt the mice than slay the dragons,
And if you drain enough mice of their blood
It is enough to keep a nation strong.
(Apart from all the mice, but then, who cares?)

If you had slayed one dragon. Even one,
We all could have lived in prosperity.
If you had only chased then all away
We all could have survived, each one of us.
But they are beautiful, and hard to kill
And mice live brief, inconsequential lives.

And so you set your traps with poisoned bait,
And call them vermin, laughing as you hunt.
You let them run away, then pounce again.
Until, at last, exhausted by your games,
The mice approach the mousetraps willingly;
Because they are so hungry for release.

The News In Poetry Day 59: Election Day

Today’s poem is inspired by a photo on the BBC news website.

Ammi is going to vote today
And Abba is going too
We have to stand in a long, long line
To do what we came to do.

Abba is looking stern today;
And Ammi is looking proud.
They tell me that voting is everyone’s right
And, one day, I’ll be allowed.

Ammi is holding my hand today
She tells me I have to try
To be a good girl as she waits to her turn
Although there’s a chance we’ll die.

Ammi is going to vote today
And Abba is going too.
And we won’t let threats get in the way
Of the thing that we came to do.

The News In Poetry Day 58: Heard It Through The Fungal Grapevine

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22462855

I’ve been on the mycorrhizae
With Mrs Barley, 2 fields over.
You know her, darling she’s the one
Who’s always overrun with clover.
And well, my love, you’ll never guess
She’s only gone and got infested
With aphids! Well, I know! The stress!
It goes to show, should have invested
Time in her defenses, really –
Can’t afford to get caught out.
So, thought I’d pass the news on, deary:
That’s what being a friend’s about!

The News In Poetry Day 54: Coalition Manifesto

No particular link today, just all the political UK based stories I read cited the UK Independence Party as the driving force behind a political decision.

We’ve got to gloss over these rape allegations
Why?
Because UKIP.
We’ve got to halt aid to developing nations
Why?
Because UKIP.
We’ve got to cave in to a vast corporation
Why?
Because UKIP.
And keep wages down, not in line with inflation
Why?
Because UKIP.

Why wait for election? It’s clear who’s in charge
The man with our balls in his grip is Farage.
